Well, life has certainly taken all of my attention lately. I thought I should post one last update before disappearing completely (not really though).  Soon, I wont be updating this blog any more. In fact, I might take the whole thing down. Now, don't worry, it's because I'm finally creating my very own OFFICIAL website. Not just a free blog. It's a slow process, but it's worth it.

Worth checking out, www.rockymountarts.org which I also just finished designing. This is the official website for The Grainery (the art gallery and studios which my Mom and I run - also where my hotshop is located) and The Rocky Mount Center for the Arts (the non-profit half of our business).

Things are going well, I'm keeping WAY too busy, and that's about that.

Pepsi Refresh Grant for $50k

So it's been a long time since I've posted on this blog. But I have a good reason why. I've been busy trying to get us (The Grainery and the Rocky Mount Center for the Arts) a $50,000 grant from Pepsi. They have this thing they've been doing for the past year (it only lasts through 2010) where non-profits from across the nation can apply for money in a variety of categories. The determining factor is the public's votes. The top ten in each category with the most votes, win their grants. It's exhausting campaigning like this. We're doing well for starters but the voting ends Nov.30th and we're still in #148. We're having a Shindig this Saturday (Nov.20th) down on the Rocky Mount Farmer's market to raise awareness - let the public know what we're up to and that they should support us (because in the end it's all for their benefit - classes and public programs, etc). There will be live music, facepainting, food, and laptop voting booths set up. We even have an article in the Franklin News Post telling people about it (at least, I hope we do. I haven't picked up today's paper yet). We've been planning this frantically for weeks now and I'll be glad when it's over. I really hope it gives us the boost in ratings(?) that we need. Even with over 1000 votes a day we're still stagnant.

So, if there's anyone out there who reads this, please Vote for us online and tell all of your friends. Hopefully after Saturday, we'll have more good news.

Also, we've decided on the Date for our Grand Opening. We're going to have it Dec.3rd, the same day as Rocky Mount's annual Hometown Christmas. All of the town officials will be there, and the public foot-traffic will be great. We'll have wine and cheese, music, and a lit christmas tree. We probably won't have my hotshop up and running for demonstrations though. Setting everything up is taking longer than anticipated because of conflicting schedules and the upcoming holidays. But the Grand Opening should still be a fun event. Maybe we'll even manage some live music.

The Grainery Sign

Sorry it took so long for this update. Things have been busy, and Blogspot's changed it's photo-uploader layout. It's really annoying and is going to take some getting used to. Sometimes, updates aren't necessarily a good thing. Anyway....

Well, things are finally moving along. We've got our walls up for the studios, and soon Yancey Electric will be coming in to finish their part of the job, as well as Tinbenders for the Heating and Air. This past Saturday, several friends came by with  helping hands and we were able to referbish 3 jewelry cabinets, paint the office walls, clean the windows, and put up all of the mirrored glass for our mosaic sign. It was a great time. We've also cleaned up the bathroom a bit and hung some art in there, though a few touch-ups need to be done to the walls, since Tinbenders scuffed them up and left dirty handprints everywhere.

A couple of weeks ago, we also painted the basement walls, which was a big job. Here's some pics of that. We kicked up a lot of dust!

The Open House is this Saturday and we're scrambling to get things ready. Granted, this is a PREVIEW, and not the Grand Opening. But we need to do this, because the 23rd is the Ferrum Folklife Festival and lots of traffic from around the nearby counties will be coming through. It will be a good time to get people's attention. I'm going to work on flyers tonight promoting our business and asking for votes in the Pepsi Refresh Grant we applied for.

And, finally, us Ladies, admiring our work. Not Bad.

Today, Joan and I will add the colored tiles and experiment with cement mixtures. Wish us luck!

More Pictures In Progress

Here are some photos of the upstairs walls being framed in and the work Mom and I have been doing on the sidewalk mosaic. We poured the cement, laid down the glass shards, and now we're applying mortar in between. It's a very long, tiring process, but when it's done, it'll be worth it.

Remodeling Photo Updates

So we've actually gotten a lot done in the past few months, though I've shown little activity here to prove it. All the walls have been finished and painted. The outside front wall completely painted. The stairs are done. The bathroom's been outfitted. The floors were finished, sanded, and varnished. Extraneous junk moved into the basement. I think it's starting to look fantastic!

Now we're moving on to the upstairs. Our "guy" is starting the process for framing out the individual spaces, insulating the ceiling because the roof is tar, and cleaning up the patchy wooden floor.

Since I've been out of town for two weeks (Pilcuck Session3 with James Mongrain), and won't be home for one more, it'll be a big surprise to see the changes in person. I can't wait. Then I'll start painting the bathroom funky colors, and maybe start on the mural for the blank wall behind my hotshop.

Article Publish in Local News

This is really exciting. Just the other week, the Franklin News Post published a small article on the front page regarding my studio. Mom and I didn't even know about it - it was a complete surprise. I can't wait until we're closer to being done so we can have a much fuller write-up.

Here's the link:
